QUE PASA 2/22/2023 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

        Today, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent. This is a special liturgical season when we take time to pray, reflect, repent, and renew so that we can grow closer to God as we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus.  Throughout Lent, I’d like to offer a reflection (from Daily Reflections for Lent: Not By Bread Alone) as we journey through Lent with each other and with our children:  

“Ash Wednesday is marked with a somber sign of our faith.  The cross on our forehead is meant to leave a lasting imprint deep within, like a spiritual tattoo that will linger long after we complete the 40-day course.  The sacrifices and prayers of the season help us clear a path, but we can’t stop there, not if we want to experience real transformation. God wants nothing less than our hearts broken open so that he might find a resting place within and make us whole. Yes, the exterior practices are important, but what matters most is what happens unseen within our hearts and souls.” 

Heavenly Father, guide us in the right ways as we begin our Lenten journey. Give us the courage to allow ourselves to be transformed by your love. Help us to use our Lenten sacrifices to dig deeper into our spiritual center and carve out a space for you alone. AMEN.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to our fifteen First Communicants who received Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament for the first time over the weekend.  This is a momentous event in their faith journey!

Thank you to our First Communion teacher, Mrs. Gurleyen, for all her guidance and preparation, and for all our families for supporting the First Communicants as they worked toward this milestone.

SCHOOL CALENDAR REMINDER

This Monday, February 27 is a Minimum Dismissal (12:30) day.  Please plan accordingly.

AZTEC TREK UPDATE

Thank you to all who have already turned in their minimum $125 collection for our mandatory school fundraiser, the Aztec Trek!  The final due date for the collection envelope is March 9, and the Aztec Trek Walk-a-thon and games will be held on March 31.

Remember–the more money that you collect, the more prizes you receive and the more points your class will receive towards a class prize!

In partnership with First Republic Bank, The BASIC Fund is launching a series of workshops that support the goal of financial wellness and are excited to extend this opportunity to families of St. Peter’s School.

The workshops are being offered on the following dates:

CYO SUMMER CAMP

CYO Summer Camp registration is open for children ages 8-14!

This week-long summer camp experience at CYO Camp in Occidental, CA normally costs $895, but because of generous camp scholarships for St. Peter’s students, the cost goes down to $140 per student!

However, Scholarships are LIMITED.  If you are interested in having your child attend CYO Summer Camp with this discounted price, please stop by the office to pick up the registration forms, or call the office so that we may give your child a form to take home.

Space is LIMITED in each camp session.  The camp session dates are as follows:

Session One: June 25 - July 1

Session Two: July 3 - July 9

Session Three: July 11 - July 17

Session Four: July 19 - July 25

The BASIC Fund application for new students is now available online at https://basicfund.org/. Renewal emails for returning students will be sent out starting in February. 

The deadline for applications is March 31, 2023.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE FAMILY GRANT                                         

April 15 is the annual deadline for submitting all information to TADS, the third party needs-evaluation company that the Archdiocese uses to collect the financial data from families. This is consistent with the process we used to award tuition assistance for this year. After the Student Aid Form has been processed by TADS, the Department of Catholic Schools gathers the completed application materials. The Archdiocese of San Francisco is unable to provide financial aid to all students who apply. Applicants are ranked on the basis of financial need. Within the limit of available funds, the Archdiocese of San Francisco will then award financial aid.                                                                                               

Late applications will NOT be considered. Students must live in Marin, San Francisco, or San Mateo Counties to be considered for the Archdiocesan Scholarship. Please visit the other scholarship programs section for more opportunities. Grant notifications will be sent out to the elementary student’s families in late May/early June. To use the TADS Financial Aid online application go to mytads.com. You will be guided through the application. If you have any questions, you can phone TADS at 800-477-8237.

We continue to endure the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  To prevent the spread of COVID-19 at school, we have developed a School Infection Mitigation Plan, which was given to each parent on the first day of school as part of the Parent-Student Handbook.  The Infection Mitigation Plan is also available on our school website at http://www.stpeterssf.org/pandemic-reopening-plan

Please remember -- If your child is feeling ill or has been exposed to COVID-19, phone the school office and keep your child at home!

Dear Parents,

        This coming weekend, we will celebrate Presidents’ Day with a 4-day school break.  During this holiday, let us remember our nation’s leaders, service men and women, and even ourselves as Christian citizens, as we work to make positive contributions to our society.  Together, let us offer this prayer (from unlockingthebible.org):

Dear God,

Thank you for your common grace and every good gift.  We know freedom, industry, jobs, healthcare, and a stable economy come at no small cost. Thank you for the men and women who’ve sacrificed to serve our Presidents and country by protecting and leading us. Thank you for making your “sun rise on the evil and on the good, and for sending rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). You show your goodness and kindness through these common, good gifts.

Show us how we can contribute, serve, speak, and act in a way that exalts Christ (Colossians 3:17).  We want to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to you, Father, through him. We want to use our gifts and opportunities to better our country and ultimately honor Jesus’ name.

SCHOOL CALENDAR REMINDER

This week, we have a long holiday weekend for Presidents’ Day.  There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 17 and Monday, February 20.

FIRST COMMUNION MASS

This Saturday, February 18, fifteen St. Peter’s students will be receiving their First Holy Communion.  You are welcome to join in this Eucharistic celebration.  Mass will begin at 2:30 PM.

All of our First Communicants are in our prayers at this special time in their faith journey!

SCHOOL PANORAMIC PICTURE DAY

St. Peter’s Lifetouch Panoramic Picture Day will take place on Tuesday, February 21.  This is a school group photo that is taken on the schoolyard.

Dear Parents,

        February is upon us! Since Valentine’s Day is in February, I associate the month of February with one of our school’s core values–LOVE.  February is also the month of the Holy Family, a family that we may look towards as an example of unconditional love.  Below is a prayer that we can offer together to remind us of our love for our families, and to remind us that we are a school family working together to help our children open their hearts and minds. As stated in our school philosophy–We are a family–somos una familia–with parents, students, and educators working together.

JESUS, Son of God and Son of Mary, bless our family. Graciously inspire in us the unity, peace, and mutual love that you found in your own family in the little town of Nazareth.

MARY, Mother of Jesus and Our Mother, nourish our family with your faith and your love. Keep us close to your Son, Jesus, in all our sorrows and joys.

JOSEPH, Foster-father to Jesus, guardian and spouse of Mary, keep our family safe from harm. Help us in all times of discouragement or anxiety.

SCHOOL CALENDAR REMINDERS

Please note that this Monday, February 13, is a Minimum Dismissal Day for students so that teachers may attend a professional development meeting.

Next week, we also have a long holiday weekend for Presidents’ Day.  There is no school on Friday, February 17 and Monday, February 20.

STAR ASSESSMENTS

This week, we continue with the 3rd round of STAR assessments for all students.  STAR assessments are required by the Archdiocese Department of Catholic Schools, and these assessments provide one data point in students’ academic progress.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

VALENTINE’S DAY TREATS

For Valentine’s Day (February 14), students may distribute pre-packaged snacks or treats and/or non-edible items (such as pencils or stickers) to their classmates.  Please be sure that your child has enough items to distribute to each person in his/her class.

Teachers will let you know how many students are in each class.

SPRING PICTURE DAY

St. Peter’s Lifetouch Spring Picture Day will take place on Tuesday, February 14.  These photos are OPTIONAL for students to take.

TRIMESTER 2 PROGRESS REPORTS

Last week, Progress Reports for Trimester 2 were sent home.  Progress Reports provide a snapshot of your child’s progress, giving time to maintain grades or submit work for improvement before the end of the trimester Report Card arrives.  

Signed and returned Progress Reports are now past due. Please sign and return your child’s progress report if you have not already done so.  If you have any questions regarding the progress report, please contact your child’s teacher.

Congratulations to our January Students of the Month!

Kindergarten - Kehlani Davila Flores comes to school with the biggest smile. She is ready to learn and will always ask the class to quiet down. She cares about her learning and others as well. When someone is having a bad day, she will be the first to give them a hug and tell them that everything is going to be okay. She is an amazing student who works hard on everything and gives it her all. No matter what we are working on, she does the work with a smile. Congratulations, Kehlani!

1st Grade - Gavin Contreras follows playground rules and tries his best during class time to finish assignments. He treats his classmates with respect. Keep up the good work. Congratulations, Gavin!

2nd Grade - Leonardo Perez shows a great attitude, hard work, and is a good friend to others. He jumps right into his work, whether it is math or reading. He is always one of the first to volunteer to help out, demonstrating the St. Peter's KEY of LOVE. Way to go, Leo!

3rd Grade - Marcus Ceron Ramos participates a lot in our classroom discussion and shows out-of-the-box thinking for both ELA and Math subjects. He shows respect towards others and is responsible with daily classroom activities. He also shows that he can GROW and ACCOMPLISH with the work he does in class. Thank you for being part of our classroom. Marcus!

4th Grade - Minerva Chamul Lopez has been a shining example of a student who embodies our school's KEYS.  She earned 2nd Honors last grading period and works hard each day to continue her growth as a student.  She is an amazing friend and is willing to help and serve in class.  Keep up the amazing work, Minerva!  You are a star. 

5th Grade - Damian Perez Ortega displays excellent academic focus and effort in class. He is always prepared and ready and eager to learn. He is also the first to lend a helping hand to his classmates and teacher. Bravo, Damian!

6th Grade - Angel Carvajal has shown tremendous growth in his learning and has demonstrated his ability to have a growth mindset. He displays his ability to persevere through difficult obstacles that often come with learning and trying something new.  He keeps up a positive demeanor in class, and shows a willingness to overcome the fear of the unknown. Congratulations, Angel!

7th Grade - Annarelly Contreras is beyond kind, attentive, and respectful. She is curious and observant, which speaks to her strong work ethic. She is always exhibiting our grow, love, and serve KEYS through her optimism and helpful nature. You're such a lovely soul, and we are proud of you and your gentle character, Annarelly!

8th Grade - Miguel Ayala has exhibited growth and has pushed himself to be his better self–academically and socially–this year in 8th grade. He asks the necessary questions and offers thought-provoking responses in class discussion. Miguel has also united with his classmates as a member of our 8A community. He continues to show his potential and has been a great addition to the class! Way to go, Miguel!

Dear Parents,

        Happy Catholic Schools Week!  This week, we’ve been taking the time to reflect on Catholic education and all the ways that we learn to grow, accomplish, love, serve, and unite here at St. Peter’s School. We are thankful for those that support us in our Catholic school mission, and that here and at home, both our faith and our minds can grow.  In gratitude, I offer this prayer (adapted from www.thereligionteacher.com): 

Almighty Father,

You sent forth your Son as a beacon of hope for all people.  As Teacher, he has given us the prime example of the importance of education.  As disciples, we look to him for inspiration and strength.  Thank you for the many sisters, brothers, priests, and laypeople who have dedicated their lives in service to our Catholic schools.  Thank you for the teachers and administrators who sustain our schools today.  Thank you for the parents who have given support to the importance of Catholic education in their daily lives.  Thank you for the students who work hard to further their education.

TRIMESTER 2 PROGRESS REPORTS

CONGRATULATIONS!

Two big accomplishments occurred last week!

- Our First Communicants received the sacrament of First Reconciliation for the first time!  They are all one step closer to receiving their First Holy Eucharist later this month.  Thank you to their teacher, Mrs. Gurleyen, and our parish priest, Father Gerardo Vazquez, for helping to coordinate this special event.

- Our 4/5 girls soccer team won their CHAMPIONSHIP after completing an undefeated season!  Huge thanks to their volunteer coaches, Raquel Rangel and Leslie Dominguez, for dedicating their time and energy for the team, and all the parents and families for the support.  GO AZTECS!

The BASIC Fund application for new students is now available online at https://basicfund.org/. Renewal emails for returning students will be sent out starting in February. 

The deadline for applications is March 31, 2023.

April 15 is the annual deadline for submitting all information to TADS, the third party needs-evaluation company that the Archdiocese uses to collect the financial data from families. This is consistent with the process we used to award tuition assistance for this year. After the Student Aid Form has been processed by TADS, the Department of Catholic Schools gathers the completed application materials. The Archdiocese of San Francisco is unable to provide financial aid to all students who apply. Applicants are ranked on the basis of financial need. Within the limit of available funds, the Archdiocese of San Francisco will then award financial aid.                                                                                              

 Late applications will NOT be considered. Students must live in Marin, San Francisco, or San Mateo Counties to be considered for the Archdiocesan Scholarship. Please visit the other scholarship programs section for more opportunities. Grant notifications will be sent out to the elementary student’s families in late May/early June.

Dear Parents,

        We are now a little more than halfway through our school year.  Today is school day #94 out of 180 days of the school year! 

      Though we face challenges each day, we can uplift ourselves by realizing our accomplishments.  Each day at school, we remind the students of our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (also known as SLEs), and how we live out our KEYS to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite.  Even during difficult times, our school community continues to accomplish our goal to meet our SLEs, and at this time–as we are preparing for Catholic Schools Week–I am especially reminded of the following SLEs:

We have the KEYS to:

- GROW by facing challenges with optimism and faith in God.

- ACCOMPLISH by listening and communicating effectively in social and academic environments.

- LOVE by demonstrating an appreciation for what others have done for us.

        While we do our best to stay positive for 2023, we continue to pray for strength as we face the every-day challenges of life.  At times, work, family, and personal demands might keep us from taking time to reflect.  The Prayer of St. Francis can help us to slow down, reflect, and remember the positive impact that we can have on each other as an “instrument of peace.”  As we pray, let us remember that God is always with us through life’s challenges!

        Next Monday, we look forward to celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we have a school holiday in his honor, and as our 8th graders will prepare and lead a prayer service for the school. He is a role model for us and our students as we discuss how others should be treated with dignity and love.  We can reflect on how Dr. King is an example of thinking critically and taking action for social justice.  It’s a perfect opportunity to apply our growth mindset along with the children, and to take action through service and prayer.

        Dr. King’s words and service remind me of our school’s core values to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite; and he can be a model to live out our KEYS:

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY

Tomorrow—January 6—is The Feast of Epiphany, which commemorates the Magi who followed a star to find the baby Jesus. The Feast of Epiphany blessing asks that we might find the Lord when our pilgrimage is ended. It reminds us that we should be looking for God, and finding Him, all along the way!  In honor of the feast of the Epiphany, we pray that all will be treated with dignity and love, and that those who come there will find, as did the magi on their journey, Jesus Christ.

Our first school Mass of 2023 will be tomorrow (Friday, January 6) at 8:30 AM in honor of the Feast of the Epiphany.  Parents are welcome to join this Eucharistic celebration

School lunches are $3.00 for the entree, $0.75 for water, and $0.75 for SunChips.

Students may order school lunches daily at the cafeteria, or parents may place orders on the Cafeteria VENMO account @StPeters-Lunch.  Venmo lunch orders must be completed by 8:30 AM.  You may also order lunches ahead of time (for the week or month) on Venmo.  Be sure to include your child’s name, grade, and items to be ordered.

*Note that the Cafeteria Venmo account is different from the Venmo school tuition/fees account.

Remember that school lunches may NOT be dropped off at the school office during the school day.  On regular dismissal days, students bring a lunch from home, or order a lunch from the cafeteria.  We also encourage students to bring a SNACK to eat during morning recess.

Kindergarten - Tatiana Juarez always comes to school ready and listening. She has a smile that lights up the whole room. She is a friend to everyone and includes everyone when out on the yard or during free choice time in the classroom. She will play with everyone and loves to include the whole class in whatever she is doing. Tatiana will always jump up and help whenever a student or teacher needs it. She loves to learn about new things and raises her hand with joy and enthusiasm. I love the energy that Tatiana brings to the classroom! 

1st Grade - Bridgette Rivas Guzman is student of the month for December. She has a passion for learning. Bridgette is kind to her classmates and follows playground rules. She listens to instructions and completes homework and classwork. Congratulations, Bridgette!

2nd grade - Natalie Rocha-Falcon is always looking for ways to help others. She can often be spotted trying to make someone feel better. In addition, she works hard in class and is always growing, especially in math. Thank you for modeling the St. Peter's Key of LOVE, Natalie!

3rd grade - Erick Maradiaga Hernandez is our student of the month. Erick does a great job in class by being responsible and respectful of others. He is helpful to others and stays on-task for any classroom job. He is a reliable and dependable friend to others. Thank you for being part of our classroom, Erick!

4th grade - Amariz Araujo Ortega has been a shining example of a student who lives out our school's KEYS.  She earned 2nd Honors during the first grading period and continues to work hard and grow as a student during the second trimester.  She is a great friend, so helpful in class, and willing to give to those in need.  She was so giving during the St. Peter's School Food Drive.  Keep up the great work Amariz!  You are a star.

5th grade - Andrea Morales-Boteo comes into class prepared and completes all her assignments. She often volunteers to help out in the classroom. Because of her outstanding work habits as a student, I have no doubt she will be very successful in the future. Brava, Andrea!

6th grade - Elizabeth Hernandez takes initiative in her classwork, and demonstrates what it means to be a compassionate learner. Ellie is a loving, sweet, and caring individual. She's always coming into class with a smile and positive attitude towards herself and others. I'm excited to see what this lifetime has to offer you, Ellie! Congratulations! :) 

7th grade - Andrea Perez lives out the St. Peter's KEYS every day! She is mature, responsible, and caring. She always offers a helping hand with a smile on her face and perseveres through hardship with strength and optimism. I am also continually impressed by Andrea's academic performance. You're a delight to have in class, Andrea, and you are appreciated!

8th grade - Matthew Chirino-Sandoval has demonstrated what it means to serve by sharing his time and talents within our school community as a leader, student council officer, classmate and friend. He also exudes positive energy and is determined to reach his true potential. Matthew is constantly asking questions and seeks ways to better himself. I am confident he will continue to grow and reach his best self! Great job,  Matthew!

      We’ve made it to Christmas vacation! We continue to reflect during this Advent season and pray for strength as the year comes to a conclusion, and as we enter a new year with hope, remembering that “Jesus is the reason for the season!”

CHRISTMAS VACATION and COVID TESTING

The school will be closed for Christmas vacation from December 22 through January 4.  School will resume with a regular schedule on Thursday, January 5.

** Before your child returns to school on January 5, please test him/her for COVID.  All students have been sent home with a COVID home test kit for this purpose.  If your child is not feeling well, please keep him/ her at home and contact the office.

ST. PETER’S SCHOOL VIRTUAL FOOD DRIVE

Thank you for showing your generosity this Advent as we collected for those in need through our virtual food drive.  We put our FAITH into ACTION and showed how St. Peter’s gives with a spirit of Open Hearts and Open Minds!

As a school, we have surpassed our $1000 school goal.  So far, we have raised $1,779!

The classes that raised the greatest amounts for the SF/Marin Food Bank so far are: 4th grade and Kindergarten!

This season of ADVENT, we remember God’s loving Mercy and Grace through times of both bounty and scarcity. For those of us who are able to, we want to continue with our beautiful tradition of service with our annual food drive for the SF/Marin Food Bank. Each year students, parents, and staff show astounding generosity by donating thousands of pounds of food to help the most vulnerable among us in the Bay Area.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the SF/Marin Food Bank has halted the collection of food donations. Instead, St. Peter’s School will host a virtual food drive, as we did last year.

We have a goal to raise $1,000 and each homeroom class will make a goal to donate a specific amount. Donations can be made online (please write your child’s name and grade in the comments) or with cash through your child’s homeroom teacher.

Wednesday, December 21 is a 12:30 dismissal day, and is the last day of school in December.  The school will be closed for Christmas vacation from December 22 through January 4.  School will resume with a regular schedule on Thursday, January 5.

Before your child returns to school on January 5, please test him/her for COVID.  All students will be sent home with a COVID home test kit for this purpose.  If your child is not feeling well, please keep him/ her at home and contact the office.

QUE PASA 12/7/22 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

        This week and next, we celebrate two feasts of Mary: the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  It’s very appropriate that we celebrate Mary during the season of Advent as we prepare for the coming of Jesus, because without Mary, and without her faith, strength, and love, we wouldn’t have Jesus.  And after all, Jesus is the reason for the season!

      Pope Francis wrote an Advent reflection a few years ago that reminds us of how Mary is a role model for us today.  Mary is our sign of FAITH and HOPE, especially during these challenging pandemic  times.  As Pope Francis describes, Mary is a loving mother who inspires us all to put God first in our lives.  Here’s a part of what Pope Francis wrote:

     “We bet on hope, on the hope of peace, and it will be possible!The journey is never finished. Just as in each of our own lives, there is always a need to restart and to rise again.Mary is a model of this spiritual attitude, to this way of being and of journeying in life.Although she was just a simple girl, she carried in her heart the hope of God.  In her womb, the hope of God took flesh, became man, and made history: Jesus Christ.  Let us be guided by her, she who is mother, she is a ‘mama’ and knows how to lead us. Let us be guided by her in this time of waiting.”                                                                                                 

      So let’s remember Mary, during Advent and every day, and how she is a role model for us to have courage, to put God first in our lives, and to have open hearts and open minds.  And when we do that, GREAT things can happen!

MORNINGS IN KINDERGARTEN and SHADOW VISITS

Spread the word!  Students entering Kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year are invited to participate in “Mornings in Kindergarten.”  While parents take a tour of the school, the prospective Kindergartener will spend some time in the Kindergarten classroom.  

Students entering grades 1-7 for the 2023-2024 school year are invited to participate in “Shadow Visits,” when they spend some time in their grade-level classroom, and take their entrance exam afterwards.

Kindergarten - Danichi Hisatake Portillo comes to school excited and ready to learn. Danichi has a love of animals and is always ready to share any fact about animals with the class. He is always one of the first ones to raise his hand and volunteer to share an answer. Danichi is helpful to his classmates, gets along with everyone, and plays well on the yard. His open heart and open mind are exactly what the students of Saint Peter's strive to embody.  

1st Grade - Edsel Altamirano-Venegas has the KEYS to grow and accomplish. Edsel follows instructions and is kind to his classmates. He tries his very best with his classwork and follows playground and classroom rules. Congratulations, Edsel!

2nd grade - David Jimenez always has a positive attitude and comes to school with a smile on his face. He works hard in class and is doing especially well in reading. I can always count on David being responsible and willing to help out in class. He embodies all of the St. Peter's KEYS. Great job, David!

3rd grade - Tino Ortega is thoughtful, insightful, and thorough in his work. He has a talent for expressing his ideas clearly. He is also a dependable and reliable student to have in the classroom. He is a good role model to other students and can be a great leader and team player. Thank you for all your great work, Tino!

4th grade - Gabriella Oliva did a great job during the first grading period earning 1st Honors.  She is such a supportive friend and a great teammate.  Along with achieving in class, she also helped lead the 4th grade volleyball team to the championship game this season.  Although her stay at St. Peter's School is coming to an end, she will be dearly missed.  We wish all the best for you and your family in Atlanta.  Keep up the great work Gabriella!  You are a star.

5th grade - Rio Rangel truly embodies the KEYS of St. Peter's–grow, accomplish, love, serve, and unite. She is an excellent student who always comes prepared for class. She is courteous, cooperative, and always willing to help out other students. Brava, Rio!

6th grade - Christian Pineda continues to demonstrate what it means to be a hard worker by going above and beyond expectations to understand something new. Christian is filled with love and joy each and every day he walks into the classroom. His presence in our classroom space is what helps make it complete. We all are so proud of you! Congratulations, Christian! Keep up the hard work. 

7th grade - Anthony Maradiaga has grown and accomplished so much this past month. He has demonstrated a growth mindset, initiative, and strong communication by taking responsibility for his academics, seeking help when necessary, and even helping his classmates with work. He takes accountability for his actions and is always respectful and patient towards those around him. Congratulations Ant, you make us so proud!

8th grade - Madonna Becerra has demonstrated what it means to accomplish and serve, by sharing her time, talents and kindness with those around her, as a classmate and friend. Her caring and enthusiastic energy are infectious! She is also constantly embracing new experiences with an open heart and open mind. Madonna has proven she knows how to live out the St. Peter’s KEYS! Keep up the good work!

QUE PASA 11/30/22 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

     December is just around the corner!  Even though we’re near the end of the year, we find ourselves just at the beginning of a Church season—ADVENT.  Advent is a time of preparation for Jesus’ birth.   

      The teachers and I will be teaching the students about Advent, and how our preparations could include special acts—such as saying extra prayers, reading the bible, giving to the school’s weekly Missions collection, or doing extra good deeds—because doing those special acts will make more room in our hearts for Jesus.  Some classes are following an Advent calendar or constructing Advent wreaths, yet some classes might also be planning special projects to help those in need.  Students that have received the sacrament of Reconciliation will also have the opportunity to receive Reconciliation with their class during December. Whatever your child and your family do during Advent, remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.  The children have heard this at school, but continue this lesson at home.  Let’s all be examples of open hearts and open minds, and know that we wouldn’t be celebrating if it wasn’t for our savior, Jesus Christ. 

     Let us offer this prayer  as we begin this season of Advent:

Jesus, 

You are light even in the darkest places.  Help us to trust in you when we are lost or lonely.  Shine hope and love into our hearts.

REPORT CARDS

Report Cards for Trimester 1 were sent home with students on Monday.  If you have not done so already, please be sure to sign your child’s report card so that he/she may return it to the teacher.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

School lunches are $3.00 for the entree, $0.75 for water, and $0.75 for SunChips.

Students may order school lunches daily at the cafeteria, or parents may place orders on the Cafeteria VENMO account @StPeters-Lunch.  Venmo lunch orders must be completed by 8:30 AM.  You may also order lunches ahead of time (for the week or month) on Venmo.  Be sure to include your child’s name, grade, and items to be ordered.

*Note that the Cafeteria Venmo account is different from the Venmo school tuition/fees account.

Remember that school lunches may NOT be dropped off at the school office during the school day.  On regular dismissal days, students bring a lunch from home, or order a lunch from the cafeteria.  We also encourage students to bring a SNACK to eat during morning recess.

DECEMBER SCHOOL CHURCH SERVICES

For the month of December, you are welcome to join our Weekly School Masses, scheduled as follows:

- Thursday, December 8 at 8:30 AM for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception 

- Monday, December 12 at 8:30 AM for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

- Tuesday, December 20 at 8:15 AM for an Advent Tuesday Mass

- Wednesday, December 21 for our Christmas Prayer Service

In addition, students in grades 3 through 8 who have already received the Sacrament of Reconciliation will have the opportunity to receive Reconciliation with their class and teachers during this Advent season.  We pray that all our school church celebrations this Advent will help prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus!

BVCC AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

Students MUST be registered with BVCC in order to stay for their after school program.

DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION

On Thursday, December 1, St. Peter’s School Administration will hold an informational Zoom meeting about the possibility of adopting a Spanish/English Dual Language Immersion program at our school.  If such a program is implemented, it would be a GRADUAL adoption, beginning with the incoming Kindergarten class in 2024-2025, at the earliest.

TUITION ACCOUNTS

All student tuition accounts must be up to date and paid through December 2022 in order for your child to return to class on Thursday, January 5, 2023.  ** If your tuition is not up-to-date before leaving for Christmas vacation, your child will not be able to return to class on Thursday, January 5, 2023. **

     As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I want to say Thank You for being part of the St. Peter’s School family!  I am proud to be part of our community as we continue to teach our children to live out and celebrate our core values to grow, accomplish, love, serve, and unite.

THANKSGIVING BREAK

There is NO SCHOOL Wednesday-Friday, November 23-25, for the Thanksgiving break.  After the Thanksgiving break, school will resume on Monday, November 28 with a Minimum Day Schedule. 

TRIMESTER 2

We are now beginning our Second Trimester of the school year.  Report Cards for Trimester 1 will be going home with students on Monday, November 28, when we return from the Thanksgiving break.  

COVID HOME TESTS

On Monday, November 21, all students were sent home with a COVID test kit.  On November 27, please use these COVID tests to test your child for COVID before returning to school after the Thanksgiving break.

If your child is ill or not feeling well, please remember to keep him/her at home until he/she is better, or until cleared by a doctor to return to school.

We are proud of our 3rd and 5th grade soccer teams, and 5th and 7th grade volleyball teams for making it to the playoffs!  Our 4th grade volleyball team advanced to the championship and won 2nd Place!  GO AZTECS!

This Sunday, November 13 at 2:30 PM, we will celebrate our Alumni & Memorial Mass at St. Peter’s Church.  At this Mass, St. Peter's alumni and friends gather to pray for loved ones who have gone home to God and for their families.  In particular, we will celebrate the Class of 1972’s 50th Reunion Year; the Class of 1997’s 25th Reunion Year, and the Class of 2007’s 15th Reunion Year.

FUNERAL MASS FOR MRS. ORTENZO

Mrs. Toni Ortenzo, a former St. Peter’s teacher who served at St. Peter’s School for over 40 years, passed away in late-October after a long battle with illness.

Mrs. Ortenzo’s funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Church on Monday, November 14 at 11:00 AM.  Alumni and friends are welcome to attend this Mass.  We are thankful for all of the love and years of service that Mrs. Ortenzo dedicated to St. Peter’s students, families, and teachers.  She and her family continue to be in our prayers

Dear Parents,

      This week, we celebrated special days in the Church: All Saints’ Day, All Souls’ Day (Dia de los Muertos). On the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation, we honor those who have lived lives faithful to God. On the Feast of All Souls, we remember and pray for our loved ones who have passed away, and honor them through prayer, or even by making special altars in their memory.  

       As we honor the Saints, let us remember how they lived out the Beatitudes—Jesus’ teachings on how to live as a Christian and to find true happiness.  The Beatitudes can help us to reflect on how to be role models for our children.  We can lead our children by example and live out our faith, showing kindness, love, and respect!

      The Beatitudes  (Matthew 5:3-10)

Blessed are the poor in spirit,for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,for they will be comforted.

School lunches are $3.00 for the entree, $0.75 for water, and $0.75 for SunChips.  Students may order school lunches daily at the cafeteria, or parents may place orders on the Cafeteria VENMO account @StPeters-Lunch.  Venmo lunch orders must be completed by 8:30 AM.  You may also order lunches ahead of time (for the week or month) on Venmo.  Be sure to include your child’s name, grade, and items to be ordered.

* Note that the Cafeteria Venmo account is different from the Venmo school tuition/fees account.

Remember that school lunches may NOT be dropped off at the school office during the school day.  On regular dismissal days, students bring a lunch from home, or order a lunch from the cafeteria.  We also encourage students to bring a SNACK to eat during morning recess.

As noted on our school calendar, there is no school on Friday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day.  School will resume on Monday, November 14 with a regular schedule.

Kindergarten - Leo Pellom is a wonderful student! It is such a joy to have him in class.  He is organized, kind, friendly, and ready to learn. Leo is a student who comes to school with a great attitude and is always prepared for the day. He will help his fellow students with any subject. He follows and respects the KEYS of Saint Peter's. When Leo is in class the whole room lights up. His positive energy has such a wonderful effect on everyone!

1st Grade - Destiny Tabora-Ortega is student of the month for October. She listens, follows instructions, and is always considerate of others. She has the KEYS to grow and accomplish. She tries her very best and it shows. Congratulations, Destiny!

2nd grade - Gabriel Quiroz-Galdamez always does his best in class and encourages his classmates to do their best as well. He follows directions the first time and gets started on his work right away. He is a good friend to others, always showing love and kindness. Keep it up, Gabriel!

3rd grade - Melissa Navarro always does her best in class and participates in every classroom discussion. She is also helpful to other students when they are struggling, and she is proactive in asking for help. She follows directions the first time, and she makes an effort to complete every class assignment no matter what the challenge is. Keep up the great work Melissa! We are rooting for you.

4th grade - Alexander Quiroz-Galdamez has been a shining example of a student living out our school's KEYS. He works hard each day to grow as a student and takes action by working on skills at home that he learned in class.  He is a loyal friend and a great team player with the spirit of helping the friends in his group whenever he is given the chance.  He is quite competitive and is striving to achieve 1st or 2nd Honors this first grading period.  Keep up the good work Alex!  You are a star.

5th grade - Genesis Garcia is 5th grade's October Student of the Month. Genesis has shown a growth mindset by showing initiative and taking responsibility for her learning. Brava, Genesis!

6th grade - Maria Espinoza is always willing to help others and engage in meaningful conversations with her peers. She continues to demonstrate what it means to be a good friend and learner. Most importantly, Maria continues to show up to class everyday as her true self, which we honor and appreciate! We are all so proud of you, and look forward to growing with you! May this be a time we celebrate your accomplishments! Congratulations, Maria! 

7th grade - Angelo Moctezuma-Bocanegra exemplifies our KEYS on a daily basis. Angelo shows growth and accomplishment by always being socially and academically engaged. He serves and unites by working well with peers and always offering a helping hand where he can. He also demonstrates love by caring for those around him. We are so thankful to have you as a part of this community, Angelo! 

8th grade - Viviana Hernandez has continued to grow and accomplish so much this year! Her focus and attention to detail has come through in every new experience she encounters. She is constantly asking questions and seeking ways to better herself. Vivi is also kind and appreciative to those around her, sharing this positive energy as she continues 8th grade! Keep up the awesome work, Vivi!

Dear Parents,

      As we conclude this month of the Rosary, we can reflect on the different events in Mary’s and Jesus’ lives. These reflections, connections, and prayers can fill us with joy and thanksgiving, and also give us strength during hard times.

     While October comes to a close and we enter into a new month, let us offer this prayer together (adapted from a prayer on gatherandgrow.com) as we continue learning and living out our core values to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite!

Dear God,

Thank you for the gift of education in every form.  As we prepare for our learning, may confidence be our foundation, may grace be our guide, and may hope be our compass toward a brighter future. Thank you to our parents and teachers for taking the time to meet on Zoom to discuss students’ progress.  Your partnership is KEY to our children’s growth and learning.  Teachers have reached out to parents who were not able to keep their conference appointment.  If you were not able to keep your appointment with your child’s teacher, please re-schedule your conference time as soon as possible.

SCHOOL HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION

Our school Halloween celebration will take place this Friday, October 28.  We will begin with a costume parade on the schoolyard at 1:00 PM, followed by games and snack sales.  Parents are welcome to join the celebration.

Students are welcome to come to school in an age-appropriate Halloween costume on Friday, October 28. However, please do not bring any costume parts or props that resemble any type of weapon.  Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

Students may bring individually-wrapped treats to share with their classmates for the Halloween celebration.  Non-edible items, like pencils or stickers, are also acceptable.  Teachers will notify families about the number of students in each class so that all students in the class are included if a treat is distributed.

We are also selling TICKETS, which may be used to play games and purchase snacks at the snack booth.  Ticket order forms were sent home; please turn in your ticket order and CASH payment by the Wednesday, October 26 due date.

Since our school Halloween celebration will be on Friday, October 28; Monday, October 31 will be a regularly scheduled school day with students in school uniform.

MRS. TONI ORTENZO

The St. Peter’s School community mourns the loss of Mrs. Toni Ortenzo, who taught at St. Peter’s School for over 40 years.  Mrs. Ortenzo taught hundreds of students and was a mentor teacher for many educators.  We keep her and her family in our prayers.

Mrs. Ortenzo’s funeral Mass will take place on Monday, November 14 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Church.  Alumni and friends are welcome to join this Mass.

October 19, 20 and 21 are Minimum Day dismissals for students so that teachers can meet with all parents for the mandatory Parent-Teacher Conferences.  This will be a time when teachers will be sharing each student’s Progress Report for Trimester 1.  Parents can learn about their children’s progress and ask teachers questions. All Parent-Teacher Conferences will be conducted via Zoom. 

Parents — If you are not able to keep your scheduled Parent-Teacher Conference appointment, please contact your child’s teacher right away, and reschedule your appointment.  You may also call the school office between 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM, and office staff will deliver the message to the teacher.

Dear Parents,

      This past Monday was our observance of Indigenous People’s Day—a holiday that celebrates Native Americans and commemorates their histories and cultures.  It is a reminder to continue to work towards social justice so that people of all cultures are treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion.  Here at school, as described in our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs), we strive towards social justice with our core values—

to GROW by embracing new experiences with an open heart and open mind; 

to ACCOMPLISH by thinking critically; 

to LOVE by making choices based on the teachings of Jesus Christ; 

to SERVE by living out the corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy; 

to UNITE by welcoming people of all backgrounds as St. Peter’s community members.

 Dear Parents,

  This Friday—October 7th—commemorates the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, and (as we pray the Hail Mary as a school each morning) the month of October is traditionally the month of the Rosary. 

       Here is a thoughtful reflection from Living the Rosary by Father John Phalen:

The Rosary starts with Mary’s human experience, and it encourages us to learn from our own.  The Rosary is:

• Remembering Christ with Mary

• Learning Christ with Mary

• Being conformed to Christ with Mary

• Praying to Christ with Mary

• Proclaiming Christ with Mary

       By looking to Mary, the courageous mother of our Savior, we can open our hearts and minds to God’s presence in our lives, and be models for our own children to live with love, patience, faith, and perseverance, even through the challenging times in our lives.

       When I pass by our grotto at school each day, I’m reminded of how much St. Peter’s students honor Mary, and I think about how they make the Sign of the Cross or stop to say a prayer at the grotto.  It’s definitely a sacred place for our entire school family.  Plus, each month, one class has the task of taking care of the grotto, by bringing flowers and even prayer cards to Mary!

       Throughout October, let us look to Mary as a role model of faith and courage, especially during this month of the Rosary!

KINDERGARTEN - Carolina Vega works very hard.  She is a student who pays attention, plays well with others, and comes to school with an open mind and open heart. Carolina beautifully embodies the KEYS of Saint Peter's.  She is always willing to help anyone in the classroom and is a wonderful classroom participant. I look forward to having her in class every day.  

1st GRADE - Joaquin Velasco is kind to his classmates and listens during class time. He is a hard worker and puts his best effort into his work. Congratulations, Joaquin! 

2nd GRADE - Rosemarie Garcia is a hard-worker.  She is always kind to everyone, and always follows directions. She is a great example for her classmates and brings out the best in others. Way to go, Rosemarie!

3rd GRADE - Solina Ramirez Herrera demonstrates great initiative by helping others, being responsible for any classroom job and trying her best in tackling difficult learning concepts. She participates heavily in classroom discussion and shows leadership in our core values in the classroom with our classroom agreement and treatment agreement, as well as the school with KEYS.  Congratulations, Solina! 

4th GRADE - Xitlali Cortes has been a shining example of a student living out our school's KEYS.  She works hard each day to grow as a student and currently serves as the 4th Grade Student Council Representative.  She is loving and kind to her friends in class, and she is willing to help in any way in and outside of the classroom.  Keep up the great work Xitlali; you are a star!  

5th GRADE - Angel Robledo-Noya is our 5th grade Student of the Month for September!  He is a polite and enthusiastic learner. He always comes to class with a positive attitude and a willingness to help others. Bravo, Angel! 

6th GRADE - Jonathan Garcia is a hard-working student, who continues to demonstrate what an open heart and open mind looks like within our classroom community. Jonathan is filled with love and joy each and every day he walks into the classroom! We are all so proud of you, and look forward to growing with you! Congratulations, Jonathan!  

7th GRADE - Paola Carranza displays each of our core values on a daily basis. She is a model student–she’s always on task with minimal instructions; respectful; and asks questions when things are unclear. She is punctual, responsible, optimistic, and kind to everyone around her. Thank you for being a standout student in class, Paola! 

8th GRADE - Julio Bautista demonstrates growth and love by striving to better himself, both in and outside the classroom. He constantly lends a helping hand to those around him, his peers, teachers and staff, not because he has to, but because he genuinely wants to. Julio is also embracing new experiences with an open heart and open mind, by tackling his 8th grade year with enthusiasm and confidence. Way to go Julio, keep up the great work!
