QUE PASA 2/17/2021 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

        Today, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning Lent. This is a special liturgical season when we take time to pray, reflect, repent, and renew so that we can grow closer to God as we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus.  Each week I’d like to offer a reflection (from Daily Reflections for Lent: Not By Bread Alone) as we journey through Lent with each other and with our children:  

“Ash Wednesday is marked with a somber sign of our faith.  The cross on our forehead is meant to leave a lasting imprint deep within, like a spiritual tattoo that will linger long after we complete the 40-day course.  The sacrifices and prayers of the season help us clear a path, but we can’t stop there, not if we want to experience real transformation. God wants nothing less than our hearts broken open so that he might find a resting place within and make us whole. Yes, the exterior practices are important, but what matters most is what happens unseen within our hearts and souls.” 

Heavenly Father, guide us in the right ways as we begin our Lenten journey. Give us the courage to allow ourselves to be transformed by your love. Help us to use our Lenten sacrifices to dig deeper into our spiritual center and carve out a space for you alone.  AMEN.

WEEKLY SCHOOL MASS

Today, we began the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday school mass.  All school community members participated virtually. 

Moving forward, we will celebrate weekly Mass as a school on Tuesday mornings.  Beginning on Tuesday, February 23, we will be returning to our weekly school Mass schedule.  Students will participate in the 8:30 AM Mass at St. Peter’s Church.  Each week, ONE class will have the opportunity to attend Mass in the Church, while all the other classes and our distance learners participate virtually, through the livestream.  Families at home are all welcome to attend these weekly virtual school Mass celebrations.  To join any school Mass, click on this link on Tuesdays at 8:30 AM: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF6mjdkFRHn0Ip0yuxdIOWw

Picture day for Middle School Cohort B, 4th graders, and all Distance Learning students is coming up on Wednesday, February 24.

For school pictures, students must be in COMPLETE UNIFORM--including their green school sweatshirt, white polo, and navy pants or uniform skirt. 

Please arrive during your child’s designated time slot, according to last name.  You may check-in at the front office on Florida Street.  Only students will be allowed on campus for photos.  Parents will be required to wait outside or in their car, and once your child’s photo is taken, he/she will be supervised to return to you.

We continue to practice infection mitigation protocols at school, and if your child is not feeling well, please do not send him/her to school unless cleared to do so.  Symptoms to watch for include:

·       Cough

·       Shortness of breath, rapid breathing, or difficulty breathing

·       Loss of taste or smell.  Children may complain that food “tastes bad” or “tastes funny”

·       Congested or runny nose

·       Sore throat

·       Headache

·       Muscle aches or body aches

·       Feeling unusually fatigued or tired

·       Diarrhea

·       Nausea or vomiting

BASIC FUND APPLICATIONS

New Applications:  Starting January 15, the BASIC Fund new application for the 2021-2022 School Year will be available online on www.basicfund.org.  Because this year has been so challenging, BASIC Fund is making a change and allowing applicants to provide their 2019 tax returns, if 2020 returns are not yet prepared. New siblings for current BASIC Fund students must request a link from BASIC Fund to apply for a new student.   The deadline is March 31, 2021

Renewal Applications:  The BASIC Fund has decided to use the financial documentation that we have on file for the current year, to process the 2021-2022 renewals for our renewing families.  In February, BASIC Fund will email families a renewal application link for each family to update their information, i.e., address, telephone, etc. Families will still be able to update any financial documentation if they would like to be considered for a higher percentage. Families that exceeded the financial guidelines but met the leeway for the 2020-2021 School Year and were awarded 25%, should submit recent financial information for consideration.  The BASIC Fund will determine if you qualify.  The deadline is March 31, 2021.

ARCHDIOCESE ELEMENTARY FAMILY GRANT

The application process for the Archdiocese Family Grant for the 2021-2022 school year has now begun.  Please go on to mytads.com to begin the application process. If you do not have ready your 2020 income tax or financial information. be sure you submit your 2019 income tax information or 2019 income information (Calworks, social security, food stamps, etc.).  You should upload or fax to Tads your 2020 income tax or 2020 financial information before the deadline. Please be sure you have completed the total Tads process by the Archdiocese deadline—April 15, 2021.

Our gray “AZTECS” hoodies, sweatpants, and t-shirts are available in youth and adult sizes, but quantities are limited.  The prices are below:

Dear Parents,

       This coming weekend, we will celebrate Presidents’ Day with a 4-day school break.  During this holiday, let us remember our nation’s leaders, service men and women, and even ourselves as Christian citizens, especially as we work to strengthen our country during these difficult times and continue to move forward during this pandemic.  Together, let us offer this prayer (from unlockingthebible.org):

Dear God,

Thank you for your common grace and every good gift.  We know freedom, industry, jobs, healthcare, and a stable economy come at no small cost. Thank you for the men and women who’ve sacrificed to serve our Presidents and country by protecting and leading us. Thank you for making your “sun rise on the evil and on the good, and for sending rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). You show your goodness and kindness through these common, good gifts.

Show us how we can contribute, serve, speak, and act in a way that exalts Christ (Colossians 3:17).  We want to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to you, Father, through him. We want to use our gifts and opportunities to better our country and ultimately honor Jesus’ name.

VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION

Since Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year, we will celebrate Valentine’s Day at school on Thursday, February 11, before our long weekend begins.  Students may bring cards or non-food items to share, such as pencils or stickers.  However, as a COVID-19 safety precaution, NO FOOD ITEMS may be shared for Valentine’s Day.  Thank you for your understanding.

QUE PASA 2/3/2021 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       February is already upon us!  Since Valentine’s Day is in February, I often associate the month of February with one of our school’s core values—LOVE.  February is also the month of the Holy Family, a family that we could look towards as an example of unconditional love.  Below is a prayer the we can offer together, to remind us of our love for our family, and to remind us that we are a school family working together to help our children open their hearts and minds.  As stated in our school philosophy: We are a family--somos una familia--with parents, students and educators working together.

JESUS, Son of God and Son of Mary, bless our family. Graciously inspire in us the unity, peace, and mutual love that you found in your own family in the little town of Nazareth.

MARY, Mother of Jesus and Our Mother, nourish our family with your faith and your love. Keep us close to your Son, Jesus, in all our sorrows and joys.

100th DAY OF SCHOOL

On January 24, a notification was sent out notifying parents that all Middle School students will be distance learning through February 5, due to a staffing shortage.  Please note that the decision to distance learn for middle schoolers is not a result of COVID-19 exposure at school; there has been no COVID-19 exposure in the middle school grades.  

Because we are short-staffed in the middle school, along with a shortage of substitute teachers, we ask that our middle schoolers participate in distance learning through February 5.

Dear Parents,

       Happy Catholic Schools Week!  This week, we’ve been taking the time to reflect on Catholic education and all the ways that we learn to grow, accomplish, love, serve, and unite here at St. Peter’s School. We are thankful that here and at home, both our faith and our minds can grow.  In gratitude, I offer this prayer (adapted from www.thereligionteacher.com): 

Almighty Father,

You sent forth your Son as a beacon of hope for all people.  As Teacher, he has given us the prime example of the importance of education.  As disciples, we look to him for inspiration and strength.  Thank you for the many sisters, brothers, priests, and laypeople who have dedicated their lives in service to our Catholic schools.  Thank you for the teachers and administrators who sustain our schools today.  Thank you for the parents who have given support to the importance of Catholic education in their daily lives.  Thank you for the students who work hard to further their education.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

TRIMESTER 2 PROGRESS REPORTS

Today, your child’s teacher will send home progress reports.  Students at school will be given paper copies, and parents of distance learners will receive digital progress reports on Class Dojo or email.  Please sign and return the paper copies, or reply to your child’s teacher once you have viewed the digital progress report.

On January 24, a notification was sent out notifying parents that all Middle School students will be distance learning through February 5, due to a staffing shortage.  Please note that the decision to distance learn for middle schoolers is not a result of COVID-19 exposure at school; there has been no COVID-19 exposure in the middle school grades.

On January 25, a notification was sent out regarding a COVID-19 exposure in one of the lower grades.  The affected class has been notified and will be in quarantine until safe to return to school.  Unaffected classes in the lower grades may still participate at school with in-person learning.

New siblings for current BASIC Fund students must request a link from BASIC Fund to apply for a new student.   The deadline is March 31, 2021

Renewal Applications:  The BASIC Fund has decided to use the financial documentation that we have on file for the current year, to process the 2021-2022 renewals for our renewing families. 

In February, BASIC Fund will email families a renewal application link for each family to update their information, i.e., address, telephone, etc. Families will still be able to update any financial documentation if they would like to be considered for a higher percentage.

Families that exceeded the financial guidelines but met the leeway for the 2020-2021 School Year and were awarded 25%, should submit recent financial information for consideration.  The BASIC Fund will determine if you qualify.  The deadline is March 31, 2021.

The application process for the Archdiocese Family Grant for the 2021-2022 school year has now begun.  Please go on to mytads.com to begin the application process. If you do not have ready your 2020 income tax or financial information. be sure you submit your 2019 income tax information or 2019 income information (Calworks, social security, food stamps, etc.).  You should upload or fax to Tads your 2020 income tax or 2020 financial information before the deadline. Please be sure you have completed the total Tads process by the Archdiocese deadline—April 15, 2021.

Dear Parents,

     Today is the presidential inauguration—marking yet another new beginning for 2021.  While we welcome new leadership into the White House, let us remember our own St. Peter’s School Core Values to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite, and do our best to live out these values to have open hearts and open minds.

     The Prayer of St. Francis can help us find the strength to take the action to work for peace and unity, especially as our country may feel broken from the pandemic and recent violent events at the Capitol.  So I ask that you take a few minutes to pray so that we can ACT as instruments of peace.

COVID-19 CASE NOTIFICATION

On January 16, a notification was emailed to parents regarding a positive COVID-19 case at school.  We are following the directions of the San Francisco Department of Public Health Department. The affected class is currently in quarantine, but other classes are safe to continue with in-person learning. 

We continue to practice infection mitigation protocols at school, and if your child is not feeling well, please do not send him/her to school unless cleared to do so.  Symptoms to watch for include:

TOMORROW -- Thursday, January 21 is School Picture Day for students in grades K-5 who are currently participating in in-person instruction and for Middle School Cohort A students.

Picture day for Distance Learning students and Middle School Cohort B students will take place on Wednesday, February 24.  For this day, a schedule will be provided for distance learning students to arrive for their picture day time slot.

For picture days, students must be in COMPLETE UNIFORM, including the green uniform sweatshirt, white polo, and uniform skirt or navy pants.  (8th graders may wear their black 8th grade sweatshirt.)

- Photographers will have markers on the floor spaced 6 feet apart for students to stand on when waiting in line.

- There will be a bar setup near the cameras where students can hang their mask while they take their picture. This bar will be sanitized after each student.          

- Photographers will sanitize their stations at specific intervals and as needed throughout the day.                                   

- Photographers are required to wear masks.

QUE PASA 1/13/2021 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       Next Monday, we look forward to celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we have a school holiday in his honor, and as our 8th graders will prepare and share a virtual prayer service for the school.  He is a role model for us and our students as we discuss how others should be treated with dignity and love.  We can reflect on how Dr. King is an example of thinking critically and taking action for social justice.  It’s a perfect opportunity to apply our growth mindset along with the children, and to take action through service and prayer.

        Dr. King’s words and service remind me of our school’s core values to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite; and he can be a model to live out our KEYS:

Knowledge feeds growth.

Every Accomplishment needs courage.

You are love.

Service Unites.

       At the same time, we pray for PEACE in our country.  I am reminded of Jesus’ words: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you.” Like Jesus and Dr. King, let us remember to be examples of respect and peace for our children.

QUE PASA 1/6/2021 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       Happy New Year!!!  I pray that everyone safely enjoyed Christmas and new year celebrations filled with lots of love and laughter, even if they weren’t like our usual celebrations of years past.  No doubt that 2020 presented us with many unexpected challenges.  However, those challenges brought about new lessons about finding happiness in simpler things, connecting with loved ones in new ways, learning how to use different tools in technology, and becoming more resourceful.  We will still feel the effects of 2020 in the months ahead, but our spirits will remain resilient and hopeful for brighter days in 2021!

Together as a school family, let us start 2021 with a prayer:

Lord, You make all things new.

You bring hope alive in our hearts 

And cause our Spirits to be born again.

Thank you for this new year,

For all the potential it holds.

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY

Today—January 6—is The Feast of Epiphany, which commemorates the Magi who followed a star to find the baby Jesus. The Feast of Epiphany blessing asks that we might find the Lord when our pilgrimage is ended. It reminds us that we should be looking for God, and finding Him, all along the way!  In honor of the fest of the Epiphany, we pray that all will be treated with dignity and love, and that those who come there will find, as did the magi on their journey, Jesus Christ.

Dear Parents,

       Although we may have felt like this time would not arrive... we’ve made it to our last week of school in 2020! I am grateful for our school community and all that we have accomplished amidst the many challenges of the pandemic.  We continue to reflect during this Advent season and pray for strength as the year comes to a conclusion, and as we enter a new year with hope.

RETURNING TO THE SCHOOL BUILDING IN JANUARY

For those students who are participating in in-person instruction, there is a survey from the Archdiocese of San Francisco Department of Catholic Schools that must be completed before returning to the school building in January.  

On this survey, if any answers are “Yes”—including to COVID-19 symptoms, contact with a current positive COVID-19 case, or out-of-state/out-of-country traveling over the Christmas vacation--then your child must participate in distance learning until cleared to return to the school building.

 To parents of our in-person learners-- the survey is available at the links below, and should be completed on January 3, the day before classes resume after Christmas vacation.

QUE PASA 12/9/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       This week, we celebrate two feasts of Mary: the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  It’s very appropriate that we celebrate Mary during the season of Advent as we prepare for the coming of Jesus, because without Mary, and without her faith, strength, and love, we wouldn’t have Jesus.  And after all, Jesus is the reason for the season.

      Pope Francis wrote an Advent reflection a few years ago that reminds us of how Mary is a role model for us today.  Mary is our sign of FAITH and HOPE, especially during these very challenging times.  As Pope Francis describes, Mary is a loving mother who inspires us all to put God first in our lives.  Here’s a part of what Pope Francis wrote:

     “We bet on hope, on the hope of peace, and it will be possible! The journey is never finished. Just as in each of our own lives, there is always a need to restart and to rise again. Mary is a model of this spiritual attitude, to this way of being and of journeying in life. Although she was just a simple girl, she carried in her heart the hope of God.  In her womb, the hope of God took flesh, became man, and made history: Jesus Christ.  Let us be guided by her, she who is mother, she is a ‘mama’ and knows how to lead us. Let us be guided by her in this time of waiting.”                                                                                                 

      So let’s remember Mary, during Advent and every day, and how she is a role model for us to have courage, to put God first in our lives, and to have open hearts and open minds.  And when we do that, GREAT things can happen!

Our annual food drive is off to a strong start!  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we’re not collecting food using the usual collection barrels, but we continue to collect monetary donations in the classrooms and on the donation website-- https://us-p2p.e-activist.com/1803/general/95028/st.-peters-school. 

There are many other ways that we are showing love during Advent—like through prayer and other good deeds.  Our food drive is just one way of living out our KEYS as we await the birth of Jesus.  We are really reaching for that $1,000 school goal!  Thank you for your generosity and for being models of LOVE, SERVICE, and UNITY at home and at school!

QUE PASA 12/2/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

      December is here--the last month of 2020!  There’s no doubt that 2020 has been a year like no other, with all the different effects of COVID-19, sheltering-in-place, and distance learning for our school work.  It’s almost hard to believe that this year is finally coming to a conclusion.

       Even though we’re near the end of the year, this past Sunday marked the beginning of a new liturgical year and the beginning of a church season—ADVENT.  Advent is a time of preparation for Jesus’ birth.   

      The teachers and I will be teaching the students about Advent, and how our preparations could include special acts—such as saying extra prayers, reading the bible, attending more virtual Mass celebrations, or doing extra good deeds—because doing those special acts will make more room in our hearts for Jesus.  Some classes are following an Advent calendar or constructing Advent wreaths, yet some classes might also be planning special projects to help those in need.  Whatever your child and your family do during Advent, remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.  The children have heard this at school, but continue this lesson at home.  Let’s all be examples of open hearts and open minds, and know that we wouldn’t be celebrating if it wasn’t for our savior, Jesus Christ.

ST. PETER’S VIRTUAL FOOD DRIVE

It’s time for our annual food drive!  We have a tradition of amazing generosity each year, where students donate thousands of pounds of food to the SF/Marin Food Bank.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the SF/Marin Food Bank has temporarily halted the use of collection barrels that we have used in the past. Instead, St. Peter’s School will be hosting a virtual food drive. Please visit our school’s food drive page here:

Families can donate directly through the website, or students can bring cash to their homeroom teachers, and it will be collected each day.

Our school's overall goal is $1,000 and the website will be open until the New Year.  This is just one of many ways that we can live our KEYS to LOVE, SERVE, and UNITE during the Advent season!   

REPORT CARDS

We are now in Trimester 2 of our school year. This past Monday, November 30, report cards were sent home.  In-person students received hard (paper) copies of the report cards, and parents of distance learning students were sent a digital form of the report card via Class Dojo or email. 

Paper copies are to be signed by a parent and returned by Friday, December 4.  For parents of Distance Learners, please respond to your child’s teacher to ensure that you have received and viewed the report card.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

COVID-19 NOTIFICATION

On Wednesday, November 25, a notification was emailed to all parents regarding a positive COVID-19 case at school, in the 2nd grade. The San Francisco Department of Public Health is working with us to keep the school safe.  The entire 2nd grade class cohort and any close contacts with the positive case are currently under quarantine and will NOT attend in-person school until they are cleared to do so.  

On Monday, November 30, another notification was sent home regarding a positive COVID-10 case in the 4th grade.  SFDPH assessed that since the infection date of this positive case was November 26 (during the Thanksgiving break while no students were together in school), there has been NO exposure to the class or to other individuals in the school.  In this case, students may continue to participate in in-person instruction.

* If an adult does not drop off the student, a parent must fill out a yellow health screening form at home, and the student must bring that completed form to school daily, each morning.

Dear Parents,

       As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I want to say Thank You for being part of the St. Peter’s School family!  I am proud to be part of our community as we continue to work through our challenges—both at home and in the school building—to teach our children to live and celebrate our core values to grow, accomplish, love, serve, and unite.  I am grateful for your support towards this goal, especially during these uncertain times.

       While we are thankful for all our blessings—like our families, our friends, and our homes, to name a few—let us also remember to pray for those who are in need, and for all who endure the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Together, let us offer this prayer (written by “Anonymous”):

THANKSGIVING BREAK

There is no school from Wednesday, November 25 – Friday, November 27 for the Thanksgiving break.  In-person and distance learning classes will resume on Monday, November 30 with a regular schedule.

TRAVEL & HOLIDAY ADVISORY FROM SFDPH

As the holiday season approaches—a time when many people typically travel and spend time with additional family members and loved ones—the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has published a Travel Advisory to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

As a reminder, non-essential travel outside of the bay area, including holiday travel, is not recommended. However, if you do choose to travel or host people who are travelling, SFDPH’s new Travel Advisory covers how to plan ahead, reduce your risk, and when to quarantine:

TRIMESTER 2

This week marks the beginning of Trimester 2 of our school year.  On Monday, November 30, report cards will be sent home.  In-person students will receive hard (paper) copies of the report cards, and parents of distance learning students will receive a digital form of the report card via Class Dojo.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

SCHOOL REOPENING

Our school building is reopen for in-person instruction for all grade levels.  The first cohort (Cohort A) of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders has begun in-person instruction this week.  Cohort B of 6th, 7th and 8th graders will begin on Monday, November 30.  When cohorts are not in the school building, they will participate in distance learning at home.  Middle Schoolers will rotate weekly between distance learning and in-person instruction.

Families who have chosen the Distance Learning option and have notified the school office will continue with full Distance Learning.

If you need to purchase a school uniform sweatshirt ($25), call the office at 415-647-8662 so we can prepare the sweatshirt.  Please pick up the sweatshirt before your child returns to school. 

Navy Blue khakis and plain white polo shirts may be purchased at stores such as Target, WalMart, and Old Navy.

Also--don’t forget that uniform shoes are solid black or solid white tennis shoes/sneakers.  (No boots.)

Please remember that students may bring in their lunch from home or order from school, but no outside lunch deliveries may be dropped off during the school day.

When your child returns to school, lunch orders will be taken from the classroom.  Students should bring in their payment and will fill in the lunch slip in their classroom.  

Younger students may bring in their payment in an envelope with their name and lunch order, and the teacher will collect that envelope.

Parents may also order lunches by 8:30 in the morning and pay via Venmo on our LUNCH ACCOUNT -- @StPeters-Lunch -- and write the student’s name and lunch order in the comments section.

TUITION AGREEMENTS

Tuition Payment Agreements (printed on bright green paper) were sent home in the mail.  Please be sure to complete this form and send it back to school in the postage-paid envelope provided, as soon as possible.  If you did not receive this form in the mail, please contact the school office.

Dear Parents,

      This Friday marks the end of our first Trimester, and the students have grown in many ways!  The teachers and I value our partnership with you—especially as we adapt new teaching and learning platforms, and adjust to new protocols at school.  We hope to continue to work together to help all students grow and meet their goals, whether at home or at school.  As the first Trimester comes to a close, and because these are an important part of our school culture, I am re-sharing the St. Peter’s Schoolwide Learning Expectations, also known as “SLEs.”  These expectations can extend into the home to help students live out our CORE VALUES to Grow, Accomplish, Love, Serve, and Unite!

Dear Parents,

       Happy Veterans’ Day!  Let us remember our veterans who have given their lives and their lifetimes to serving our country at home and abroad, so that people may enjoy their freedom.  Here at school, we recognize our very own Mr. Frank Gonzalez, an army veteran, and all of your loved ones who are veterans as well.  Although our country and the world have a long way to go so that all are treated with equal respect and freedoms, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the struggle and commitment of our veterans.  God bless our veterans and their families!

       At the same time, since we have learned the results of the presidential election, let us also pray for peace in our country, and that our leaders will be models of respect and understanding for those that they serve.  

Let us offer this prayer in thanksgiving to our Veterans and our government leaders:

QUE PASA 11/4/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       Over the weekend and on Monday, we celebrated special days in the Church: All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. On the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation, we honor those who have lived lives faithful to God.  On the Feast of All Souls, we remember and pray for our loved ones who have passed away, and honor them through prayer, or even by making special altars in their memory.  

       As we honor the Saints, let us remember how they lived out the Beatitudes—Jesus’ teachings on how to live as a Christian and to find true happiness.  The Beatitudes can help us to reflect on how to be role models for our children.  We can lead our children by example and live out our faith, showing kindness, love, and respect!

      The Beatitudes  (Matthew 5:3-10)

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

When your child returns to school, lunch orders will be taken from the classroom.  Students should bring in their payment and will fill in the lunch slip in their classroom.  

Younger students may bring in their payment in an envelope with their name and lunch order, and the teacher will collect that envelope.

Parents may also order lunches by 8:30 in the morning and pay via Venmo on our LUNCH ACCOUNT -- @StPeters-Lunch -- and write the student’s name and lunch order in the comments section.

Dear Parents,

       As we conclude this month of the Rosary, we can reflect on the different events in Mary’s and Jesus’ lives. These reflections and prayers can fill us with joy and thanksgiving, and also give us strength during hard times.

       At this time, we pray especially for our own students and teachers, as many of us begin the transition to in-person instruction here in our school building.  Here is a prayer (adapted from a prayer on gatherandgrow.com) for all of us while we continue learning, whether it’s at school or at home!

Dear God,

Thank you for the gift of education in every form.  As we prepare for our learning, may confidence be our foundation, may grace be our guide, and may hope be our compass toward a brighter future. We pray that we have eyes to see the needs of those around us and a heart to love well.  May we face each day with positivity knowing that no matter what comes our way, we do not have to face it alone.

We know much will seem very different this year, but we are confident that through You, our loving Father, your care for us will never change.  May we show the same love and care for one another in all we say and do at school, at home, and in our community.  AMEN.

SCHOOL REOPENING

Our school building is reopen for in-person instruction, according to the following schedule: 

- Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades began on October 26;

-  Add 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades on Tuesday, November 10; 

-  The first cohort of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on Monday, November 23. 

Families who have chosen the Distance Learning option and have notified the school office will continue with full Distance Learning.

The BVCC After-School Program is currently full, but they are accepting names on their waitlist.  Only full-time, pre-registered students in BVCC will be accepted for after-school care once school reopens.  For questions regarding BVCC, please contact Rochelle at 415-713-0625 or Judy at 415-283-5545.

Dear Parents,

I feel blessed to have been a part of the St. Peter’s School community over the past 19 years as a teacher, a parent, and an administrator.  I’m grateful for all the people who have shown and continue to show so much love and dedication to St. Peter’s, especially during these unprecedented and especially challenging times—whether we are participating in distance learning or in-person instruction, which begins next week!  As the celebration of our annual Alumni Memorial (virtual) Mass approaches this Sunday, I am reminded of all my students—many of whom are now St. Peter’s alumni, and whose own children are current students!  Here is a special alumni prayer that we can offer in thanksgiving for all alumni and for all who have been a part of St. Peter’s rich history:

Welcoming God, with glad hearts we celebrate our shared histories. In deep gratitude that stretches back through the years, we remember the strong friendships forged at St. Peter’s School. We give thanks for the devoted lives of teachers, coaches, mentors, and family whose generosity nurtured students as they grew.                                                                             May alumni and St. Peter’s community members enjoy their time together as they share memories of days gone by and news of where life’s journey has taken them. This past Monday was our observance of Indigenous People’s Day—a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures.  For me, it is also a reminder to respect ALL cultures and continue to work towards social justice so that all people are treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion. Here at school, as described in our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs), we guide our students towards social justice in various ways—

to GROW by embracing new experiences with an open heart and open mind; 

to ACCOMPLISH by thinking critically; 

to LOVE by making choices based on the teachings of Jesus Christ; 

to SERVE by living out the corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy; 

to UNITE bywelcoming people of all backgrounds as St. Peter’s community members.

Even during these challenging and uncertain times, together, let us continue our efforts towards social justice and offer the following prayer:

Dear Parents,

Today—October 7th—commemorates the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, and (as we’ve been praying the Hail Mary during our virtual morning assemblies) the month of October is traditionally the month of the Rosary. 

Here is a thoughtful reflection from Living the Rosaryby Father John Phalen:

The Rosary starts with Mary’s human experience, and it encourages us to learn from our own.  The Rosary is:

·       Remembering Christ with Mary

·       Learning Christ with Mary

·       Being conformed to Christ with Mary

·       Praying to Christ with Mary

·       Proclaiming Christ with Mary

By looking to Mary, the courageous mother of our Savior, we can open our hearts and minds to God’s presence in our lives, and be models for our own children to live with love, patience, faith, and perseverance, even through the challenging times in our lives. 

When I pass by our grotto at school each day, I’m reminded of how much St. Peter’s students honor Mary, and I think about how they make the Sign of the Cross or stop to say a prayer at the grotto.  It’s definitely a sacred place for our entire school family.

Throughout October, let us look to Mary as a role model of faith and courage, especially during this month of the Rosary!

Our application to reopen the school building has been completed and submitted to the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH).  The application will be reviewed by multiple committees, and a school site visit is scheduled for tomorrow--October 8--so that SFDPH representatives can check the building and our procedures for safety and compliance.

Though we must first wait for input from the SFDPH, we hope that we can reopen the school building according to the following schedule: 

- Monday, October 26 for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades; 

- Add 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades on Monday, November 9;

QUE PASA 9/30/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

We have come to the end of September!  Looking back on the month, I can see how we lived our KEY—“Knowledge feeds growth.” Though we are in difficult times, the challenges we’ve had to face became opportunities for learning and growth, and I know that we will continue to grow together as the school year progresses!

This Sunday, October 4, we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, and our city’s patron saint!  Let St. Francis be a reminder to us to examine habits that might harm our Earth and take action towards caring for all of God’s gifts.

As September comes to a close and we move forward into October, let us pray The Peace Prayer of St. Francis:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy. 

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

October 21, 22, and 23 are Minimum Day dismissals for students so that teachers can meet with all parents for the mandatory Parent-Teacher Conferences.  This will be a time when parents can learn about their children’s progress and ask teachers questions. All Parent-Teacher Conferences will be conducted via Zoom. Parents will receive more information next week regarding scheduling a conference with your child’s teacher.

Dear Parents,

       On September 24, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, or as we lovingly call it, Mercy Day!  We remember Catherine Mcauley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy and the first House of Mercy in Ireland, to help those in need in her community.  At St. Peter’s, we remember and celebrate the Sisters of Mercy who founded our school and continue to care for and support our students to this day.  We are grateful for their love and support!

     The sisters of Mercy our living examples to us for living out the mission of Mercy.  MERCY means to show love and compassion towards others; to forgive others and to be grateful to be forgiven by others; to show charity and generosity, especially to those in need; to have the courage to stand up for what’s right, especially for others who are afraid to stand up for themselves; to have faith in God. MERCY means having an open heart and open mind!

     Let’s remember to be thankful for all the good works of the Sisters of Mercy, and try our best to live out the mission of Mercy ourselves, not only at St. Peter’s School, but everywhere!

REMOTE STAR TESTING

This week, we will conclude our first round of remote Renaissance STAR assessments. Please know that the purpose of these assessments in Reading and Math is to help teachers know how they can best help students. It will not be part of the students’ grade, yet it will help teachers determine areas where students may need extra help or where students need to be further challenged. Remote STAR testing was new for us all, so thank you for your cooperation as we went through this process for the first time!

SCHOOL REOPENING UPDATE

It has now been determined that our school will continue Distance Learning until late-October. In San Francisco county, the process to reopen for in-person instruction is a lengthy one, which includes meetings, reviews, and at least one on-site school visit from the San Francisco Department of Public Health.  With various schools in line to complete this entire process, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date for reopening our school building.

By late October, we hope to begin with in-person instruction for those who choose that option for their children, as long as we are cleared to do so, with the safety of students, faculty, and staff as a priority.  Then, we will begin with a staggered start--this means that we will first open for our students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades; then followed by adding the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades the following week; and finally the middle school students will join the following week.  Please know that due to the changing COVID-19 situation, our plans may change, so please watch for updates on Class Dojo and school email messages.

DISTANCE LEARNING SUPPLIES PICK-UP

Since distance learning for all students is going longer than expected (and because our math books arrived late due to a delay in shipment), we are having another supply pick up this week.  Supplies will be distributed on Florida Street, outside of our front office doors.  Please come at your scheduled time. (If your child is currently enrolled with BVCC, your child will receive his/her supplies at school during the program.)  If you are unable to come at your scheduled time, contact your child’s teacher so alternate arrangements can be made.

ZOOM LEARNING EXPECTATIONS

• Student microphones may be disabled to help the teacher retain attention during the lesson.

• Video should be enabled to show your presence.

• Do not eat or play with other items or devices during Zoom sessions.

• Have the necessary supplies ready for class, and maintain a distraction-free learning space.

• Zoom sessions may not be recorded without parental consent from all participants.
