Dear Parents,

       Happy Veterans’ Day!  Let us remember our veterans who have given their lives and their lifetimes to serving our country at home and abroad, so that people may enjoy their freedom.  Here at school, we recognize our very own Mr. Frank Gonzalez, an army veteran, and all of your loved ones who are veterans as well.  Although our country and the world have a long way to go so that all are treated with equal respect and freedoms, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the struggle and commitment of our veterans.  God bless our veterans and their families!

       At the same time, since we have learned the results of the presidential election, let us also pray for peace in our country, and that our leaders will be models of respect and understanding for those that they serve.  

Let us offer this prayer in thanksgiving to our Veterans and our government leaders:

Lord God, Almighty Father, creator of mankind and author of peace, as we are ever mindful of the cost paid for the liberty we possess, we ask you to bless our government officials and the members of our armed forces.  Give them courage, hope and strength.  May they ever experience your firm support, gentle love and compassionate healing.  Be their power and protector, leading them from darkness to light.  To you be all glory, honor and praise, now and forever.  Amen.

SCHOOL REOPENING

Our school building is now reopen for in-person instruction, for Kindergarten through 5th grade students.  The first cohort (Cohort A) of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will begin in-person instruction on Monday, November 23.  Cohort B of 6th, 7th and 8th graders will begin on Monday, November 30.  When cohorts are not in the school building, they will participate in distance learning at home.  Middle Schoolers will rotate weekly between distance learning and in-person instruction.

Families who have chosen the Distance Learning option and have notified the school office will continue with full Distance Learning. 

Middle School parents – please check your Class Dojo messages from your child’s homeroom teacher to see what cohort (A or B) to which your child has been assigned.

As we prepare for in-person instruction at school, we also need to UNITE and prepare our school uniforms!

If you’d like to purchase school uniform items (such as a uniform skirt or jumper) from Ruth’s Children’s Shoppe, please call Ruth’s to make an appointment: 415-468-4399 or 415-238-6356.

If you need to purchase a school uniform sweatshirt ($25), call the office at 415-647-8662 so we can prepare the sweatshirt.  Please pick up the sweatshirt before your child returns to school.

Navy Blue khakis and plain white polo shirts may be purchased at stores such as Target, WalMart, and Old Navy.

Also--don’t forget that uniform shoes are solid black or solid white tennis shoes/sneakers.  (No boots.)

Younger students may bring in their payment in an envelope with their name and lunch order, and the teacher will collect that envelope. 

Parents may also order lunches by 8:30 in the morning and pay via Venmo on our LUNCH ACCOUNT -- @StPeters-Lunch -- and write the student’s name and lunch order in the comments section.

QUE PASA 11/4/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       Over the weekend and on Monday, we celebrated special days in the Church: All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. On the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation, we honor those who have lived lives faithful to God.  On the Feast of All Souls, we remember and pray for our loved ones who have passed away, and honor them through prayer, or even by making special altars in their memory.  

       As we honor the Saints, let us remember how they lived out the Beatitudes—Jesus’ teachings on how to live as a Christian and to find true happiness.  The Beatitudes can help us to reflect on how to be role models for our children.  We can lead our children by example and live out our faith, showing kindness, love, and respect!

      The Beatitudes  (Matthew 5:3-10)

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Dear Parents,

       As we conclude this month of the Rosary, we can reflect on the different events in Mary’s and Jesus’ lives. These reflections and prayers can fill us with joy and thanksgiving, and also give us strength during hard times.

       At this time, we pray especially for our own students and teachers, as many of us begin the transition to in-person instruction here in our school building.  Here is a prayer (adapted from a prayer on gatherandgrow.com) for all of us while we continue learning, whether it’s at school or at home!

Dear God,

Thank you for the gift of education in every form.  As we prepare for our learning, may confidence be our foundation, may grace be our guide, and may hope be our compass toward a brighter future. We pray that we have eyes to see the needs of those around us and a heart to love well.  May we face each day with positivity knowing that no matter what comes our way, we do not have to face it alone.

QUE PASA 10/21/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

I feel blessed to have been a part of the St. Peter’s School community over the past 19 years as a teacher, a parent, and an administrator.  I’m grateful for all the people who have shown and continue to show so much love and dedication to St. Peter’s, especially during these unprecedented and especially challenging times—whether we are participating in distance learning or in-person instruction, which begins next week!  As the celebration of our annual Alumni Memorial (virtual) Mass approaches this Sunday, I am reminded of all my students—many of whom are now St. Peter’s alumni, and whose own children are current students!  Here is a special alumni prayer that we can offer in thanksgiving for all alumni and for all who have been a part of St. Peter’s rich history:

Welcoming God, with glad hearts we celebrate our shared histories. In deep gratitude that stretches back through the years, we remember the strong friendships forged at St. Peter’s School. We give thanks for the devoted lives of teachers, coaches, mentors, and family whose generosity nurtured students as they grew.                                                                             May alumni and St. Peter’s community members enjoy their time together as they share memories of days gone by and news of where life’s journey has taken them. May their personal reunions be shaped by kindness and laughter, and may the stories told and retold bring delight and good will. May the memories of moments together lead us all to treasure ever more fully each beat of our hearts and every new day life brings us.                                                                          We ask this, through Christ our Lord. PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

October 21, 22, and 23 are Minimum Day dismissals for students so that teachers can meet with all parents for the mandatory Parent-Teacher Conferences.  This will be a time when parents can learn about their children’s progress and ask teachers questions. All Parent-Teacher Conferences will be conducted via Zoom. 

Parents—On Class Dojo, your child’s teacher will send you a reminder of your Zoom appointment time.  Please send your child’s teacher a message if you have any questions.  We look forward to conferencing with you this week!

ALUMNI MEMORIAL MASS

Dear Parents,

This past Monday was our observance of Indigenous People’s Day—a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures.  For me, it is also a reminder to respect ALL cultures and continue to work towards social justice so that all people are treated with kindness, dignity, and compassion. Here at school, as described in our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs), we guide our students towards social justice in various ways—

to GROW by embracing new experiences with an open heart and open mind; 

to ACCOMPLISH by thinking critically; 

to LOVE by making choices based on the teachings of Jesus Christ; 

to SERVE by living out the corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy; 

to UNITE bywelcoming people of all backgrounds as St. Peter’s community members.

Even during these challenging and uncertain times, together, let us continue our efforts towards social justice and offer the following prayer:

God, you have given all peoples one common origin.
It is your will that they be gathered together
as one family in yourself.
Fill the hearts of humankind with the fire of your love

ALUMNI MEMORIAL MASS

Dear Parents,

Today—October 7th—commemorates the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, and (as we’ve been praying the Hail Mary during our virtual morning assemblies) the month of October is traditionally the month of the Rosary. 

Here is a thoughtful reflection from Living the Rosaryby Father John Phalen:

The Rosary starts with Mary’s human experience, and it encourages us to learn from our own.  The Rosary is:

·       Remembering Christ with Mary

·       Learning Christ with Mary

·       Being conformed to Christ with Mary

·       Praying to Christ with Mary

·       Proclaiming Christ with Mary

By looking to Mary, the courageous mother of our Savior, we can open our hearts and minds to God’s presence in our lives, and be models for our own children to live with love, patience, faith, and perseverance, even through the challenging times in our lives. 

When I pass by our grotto at school each day, I’m reminded of how much St. Peter’s students honor Mary, and I think about how they make the Sign of the Cross or stop to say a prayer at the grotto.  It’s definitely a sacred place for our entire school family.

Throughout October, let us look to Mary as a role model of faith and courage, especially during this month of the Rosary!

SCHOOL REOPENING UPDATE

Our application to reopen the school building has been completed and submitted to the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH).  The application will be reviewed by multiple committees, and a school site visit is scheduled for tomorrow--October 8--so that SFDPH representatives can check the building and our procedures for safety and compliance.

Though we must first wait for input from the SFDPH, we hope that we can reopen the school building according to the following schedule: 

- Monday, October 26 for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades; 

- Add 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades on Monday, November 9; 

- The first cohort of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on Monday, November 23.  (This date has been changed from Nov. 16 to Nov. 23 because SFDPH now requires a 2-week interval before a new grade-level group is added into the general school reopening.)

** These dates are subject to change, and parents will continue to receive updates as the school receives them.  

Families who have chosen the Distance Learning option and have notified the school office/completed the survey will continue with full Distance Learning.

QUE PASA 9/30/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

We have come to the end of September!  Looking back on the month, I can see how we lived our KEY—“Knowledge feeds growth.” Though we are in difficult times, the challenges we’ve had to face became opportunities for learning and growth, and I know that we will continue to grow together as the school year progresses!

This Sunday, October 4, we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, and our city’s patron saint!  Let St. Francis be a reminder to us to examine habits that might harm our Earth and take action towards caring for all of God’s gifts.

As September comes to a close and we move forward into October, let us pray The Peace Prayer of St. Francis:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

Dear Parents,

       On September 24, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, or as we lovingly call it, Mercy Day!  We remember Catherine Mcauley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy and the first House of Mercy in Ireland, to help those in need in her community.  At St. Peter’s, we remember and celebrate the Sisters of Mercy who founded our school and continue to care for and support our students to this day.  We are grateful for their love and support!

     The sisters of Mercy our living examples to us for living out the mission of Mercy.  MERCY means to show love and compassion towards others; to forgive others and to be grateful to be forgiven by others; to show charity and generosity, especially to those in need; to have the courage to stand up for what’s right, especially for others who are afraid to stand up for themselves; to have faith in God. MERCY means having an open heart and open mind!

     Let’s remember to be thankful for all the good works of the Sisters of Mercy, and try our best to live out the mission of Mercy ourselves, not only at St. Peter’s School, but everywhere!

REMOTE STAR TESTING

This week, we will conclude our first round of remote Renaissance STAR assessments. Please know that the purpose of these assessments in Reading and Math is to help teachers know how they can best help students. It will not be part of the students’ grade, yet it will help teachers determine areas where students may need extra help or where students need to be further challenged. Remote STAR testing was new for us all, so thank you for your cooperation as we went through this process for the first time!

It has now been determined that our school will continue Distance Learning until late-October. In San Francisco county, the process to reopen for in-person instruction is a lengthy one, which includes meetings, reviews, and at least one on-site school visit from the San Francisco Department of Public Health.  With various schools in line to complete this entire process, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date for reopening our school building.

By late October, we hope to begin with in-person instruction for those who choose that option for their children, as long as we are cleared to do so, with the safety of students, faculty, and staff as a priority.  Then, we will begin with a staggered start--this means that we will first open for our students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades; then followed by adding the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades the following week; and finally the middle school students will join the following week.  Please know that due to the changing COVID-19 situation, our plans may change, so please watch for updates on Class Dojo and school email messages.

Since distance learning for all students is going longer than expected (and because our math books arrived late due to a delay in shipment), we are having another supply pick up this week.  Supplies will be distributed on Florida Street, outside of our front office doors.  Please come at your scheduled time. (If your child is currently enrolled with BVCC, your child will receive his/her supplies at school during the program.)  If you are unable to come at your scheduled time, contact your child’s teacher so alternate arrangements can be made.

Dear Parents,

       Though we are in our 4thweek of school, this is our first FULL week of Zoom classes.  In this relatively short amount of time, I feel that the students, teachers, and staff have grown very much as we move forward with distance learning. We’ve learned from our past distance learning experiences and want to continue to learn and grow from our experiences.  I reflect on the many pieces and people that must come together in order for us live out our mission of Mercy and education at St. Peter’s.  Parents, teachers, staff, volunteers, clergy, and students--there’s much to coordinate!  We at school want to be partners in faith and education with parents, so that we can be positive examples of learning and growing.  Together, we can model the ways we can live out our KEYS:  Knowledge feeds growth.  Every accomplishment needs courage.  You are love.  Service unites.  Your partnership is valuable to us, and we hope to strengthen that collaboration as the year goes on!

REMOTE STAR TESTING

TDAP VACCINATIONS

California Law, (California State Law A354) requires that all students entering 7th-12thgrades show proof of a Tdap (Whooping Cough) Pertussis booster shot. If you have not already done so, please submit documentation to the school as soon as possible. The San Francisco Department of Health informs us we cannot offer a grace period for those who do not have a booster. Please contact your child’s health care provider and arrange for the Tdap booster.

September 24     Feast of Our Lady of Mercy – “Mercy Day”

QUE PASA 9/9/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       This week marks the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, when thousands of people were killed or injured as a result of hate and ignorance.  Many felt fear and anxiety.  Yet in response, people showed compassion, unity, courage, and service as they helped those in need.

       Even though 9/11 happened 19 years ago, it brings to mind our current political climate, and how people may feel fear and anxiety due to issues related to race, the economy, and COVID -19.  This makes our work at St. Peter’s even more meaningful and important, as we guide children to act in unity with love.  Our KEYS—“You are Love” and “Service unites”—are reminders that we can be positive examples to listen to other perspectives, act with kindness, and work towards justice. We want St. Peter’s School to be a safe place for students to grow and learn, where they can accomplish their goals with open hearts and open minds.  Let us continue our partnership as we reach for this goal.

DISTANCE LEARNING ITEMS

- Based on the direction from the Archdiocese Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Distance Learning for all students will continue until September 18. California Law, (California State Law A354) requires that all students entering 7th-12thgrades show proof of a Tdap (Whooping Cough) Pertussis booster shot. If you have not already done so, please submit documentation to the school no later than September 4. TITLE I FAMILY INCOME SURVEY

Yesterday, a link to a Family Income Survey was shared on Class Dojo.  Please click on the link -- Family Income Survey-- to complete the survey by September 11.  This information is important for our school to receive very helpful funding from SFUSD for academic and counseling services for our students.  Names are not necessary on the survey, and all information will be kept confidential.  Thank you for your cooperation!

DISTANCE LEARNING ITEMS

- Based on the direction from the Archdiocese Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Distance Learning for all students will continue until September 18. This date may be extended again as we receive updates regarding COVID-19.  To read the complete letter from the superintendent, see the Class Dojo post from September 1, 2020.  

- Maintain a learning space at home away from distractions, where your child can participate on Zoom classes and complete his/her daily work with the proper supplies on hand.

- Please ensure that your child has set up his/her own Class Dojo account.  Students should not be using their parents’ accounts.

- For grades 4-8, students and teachers are utilizing Google Classroom.  Parents—if you have not received an email invitation to join your child’s class on Google classroom, please notify your child’s teacher right away.  *Parents must accept the invitation in order to receive updates on your child’s assignment completion.

Welcome back to school! Mr. Suarez (Director of School Culture and Community Life), Mrs. Fresnoza (Director of Academics), all the faculty and staff, and I hope that you had a safe and restful summer break.  

We understand that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are faced with a number of challenges. Already, this school year is beginning very differently, as we all participate in distance learning.  Until further notice from the San Francisco Department of Public Health and the Archdiocese, we will continue with distance learning for all students.  If you have any questions regarding distance learning, please contact the office or your child’s teacher so that we can help to make this a positive experience.

LEARNING MATERIALS AND LEARNING SPACE

Thank you to all who came to pick up the learning materials this past Monday and Tuesday, and for all the parents who attended the informational Zoom meetings with the teachers.  Now, please make sure students keep their supplies—including books, papers, pencils, and device—in a learning space at home without distractions, so that students are able to fully participate in Zoom classes and complete daily assignments!

Today (Wednesday), will be the first Zoom classes for students.  Please follow your teacher’s directions on Class Dojo for the Zoom link and meeting time.  Tomorrow (Thursday), we will begin following the regular distance learning schedule distributed by teachers with the learning supplies, and available on the school website: http://www.stpeterssf.org/parents-students

QUE PASA 6/10/2020 (English)

Dear Parents,

       What a school year we’ve had!  Not only did we successfully prepare for and complete our school accreditation process (which is a significantly large task for the entire school community), but we also completed an entire trimester of Distance Learning—a very new platform of teaching and learning for us all.

       Through all the challenges, we’ve learned and adapted.  We faced some difficulties, but keeping an open heart and mind helped us to keep moving forward.  The teachers and I are grateful your understanding and partnership, especially during these uncertain times.

       We continue to plan for the re-opening of the school year, which is on August 24. With different guidelines changing rather quickly, we will be prepared for different scenarios.  For the latest updates, please be sure to check Class Dojo and email over the summer.  However we are allowed to proceed with our reopening in the Fall, we will do so with the safety of our school community as a priority.

       I share with you this prayer to end this school year:

Dear God,

We give thanks for: all the teaching and learning that has taken place, both in and out of the classroom; for the talents that have been shared and the challenges that have been faced; for the respect and care that has been given; for the faith that has been lived in our daily struggles; for the hope that has lifted our hearts on the dark days and for the love that has kept us going.  We give thanks for the community that we are. Bless our children and may the Holy Spirit inspire them with calmness and confidence and keep them safe.  Pour out your love on our families so that we may return renewed and refreshed to continue our journey together.  AMEN.

THANK YOU, TEACHERS!

Some of our teachers will be moving on from St. Peter’s School at the end of this school year, as they keep a growth mindset and try something new, just as we encourage our students to do! 

We give thanks to Ms. Hanson, who creatively taught Middle School Math this past school year.

We are grateful to Ms. Solorio, who served her one-year commitment as our Mercy Corps volunteer and 6thgrade Science teacher.

We thank Mrs. Schusteritsch, who has taught 2ndgrade and prepared students for First Communion for the past four years.

We are grateful for Ms. Watters, a teacher leader who taught 4thgrade, was a spirited Student Council moderator, and helped to plan a variety of school events for the past two years.

We give thanks to Ms. Land, another teacher leader who taught Middle School Social Studies and Religion, and helped to coordinate Middle School electives, camp, and a variety of special learning opportunities for the past four years.

Though we are sad to see them go, we are proud of their accomplishments and appreciate all the love they have shown our students.  We are extremely grateful for their service and wish them the best on their future endeavors!

For the upcoming school year, we are all-set and ready to welcome wonderful teachers to fill their positions. We look forward to this new growth at St. Peter’s!

SUMMER LEARNING GOALS

For the 3rdTrimester, teachers have written individual narratives for each student to go along with the report card.  Every narrative includes SUMMER LEARNING GOALS. The goals include completing a Summer Reading Log and continuing regular use of the online programs, such as Lexia, ST Math, RAZ Kids, ReadWorks, Mathletics, and Khan Academy.  Completed reading logs can be returned in August, and teachers will also check progress in the recommended online programs.

Let’s keep on growing! Prevent summer learning loss, and continue to take a bit of time each day to practice reading and math skills. 

CHROMEBOOKS

If your child borrowed a school Chromebook for Distance Learning, please return the Chromebook to the elementary science lab during your specified drop-off/pick-up time.  If you are returning in the Fall and would like to borrow the Chromebook over the summer so your child can continue progress through the assigned online programs, please stop by the elementary science lab to complete a Chromebook extension form.

QUE PASA 6/3/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       The 8th graders are taking their final steps towards GRADUATION!  We proudly share in their accomplishments as we—their families and teachers—have helped them to lay the foundation for their future.  When we celebrate their graduation, don’t forget to celebrate us as a whole school community as well!

       The Class of 2020 is making history as our first class to have a virtual graduation this Friday, followed by personal diploma distributions on Saturday.  Stay tuned on Class Dojo for photos of this celebration!

       Though we are not all able to be together to celebrate our 8th graders, together we can offer this prayer for our soon-to-be graduates:

       Loving God, we thank you for our graduates. You have   

       blessed them during their years at St. Peter’s School with

       education. Help them to look forward to their next steps in

This Friday (June 5) is the last day of Zoom classes.  Teachers may ask students to join in Zoom sessions next week, for some additional fun end-of-year activities.  Please check your teacher’s Class Dojo updates for any special instructions.

BVCC UPDATE

QUE PASA 5/27/2020 (English)

Dear Parents,

       As we approach the end of May, we also approach the end of the Easter season with Pentecost Sunday this Sunday—the day we remember when the Holy Spirit, appearing as flames over each of the apostles—descended upon them. 

       The Holy Spirit filled the disciples with courage and faith, empowering them to share the Good News with others. They began to tell others about Jesus, and that he died for us and rose to new life.  Pentecost can have an even more special meaning for us at St. Peter’s, because on Pentecost, St. Peter spoke to a crowd and asked the people to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Many people were baptized that day, and the apostles continued to baptize others, sharing the Holy Spirit’s strength.

       God the Father sent Jesus to teach us and be our Savior; Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help and guide the Church.  Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit is with us to guide us and give us strength, which can be especially comforting during these difficult times. Together, we can offer this prayer for Pentecost (from WeBelieveAndShare.com):

Holy Spirit of life, enflame us with passion for the Good News.  Let our voices ring with the hope and promise of Christ.

Holy Spirit of Love, immerse us in compassion and kindness.  May our words bring comfort to those in need of consolation and assurance.

On May 18, a letter from Pam Lyons, the Archdiocese of San Francisco’s Superintendent of Catholic Schools, was posted on Class Dojo and was also emailed to parents through SchoolSpeak.  This letter explains some possibilities for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.  If you have not yet read the letter, please check ClassDojo or your email to access the letter.

DISTANCE LEARNING REFLECTIONS / SURVEYS

Each teacher will be sharing a link to a Distance Learning reflection survey.  For grades Kindergarten through 3rdgrade, there is a single survey that both parents and students can complete together.  For grades 4 through 8, there are separate surveys: one for parents to complete, and one for student to complete.  Please help us learn and grow from our Distance Learning experience by completing these reflection surveys.  Thank you!

BVCC UPDATE

Last Friday, new guidelines were posted allowing summer programs to be held in San Francisco.  BVCC will host a small, modified summer program at St. Peter’s School, from June 22-July 31.  For more information, please contact Rochelle at rochelle.bvcc@gmail.comor call 415-713-0625.

Dear Parents,

       It’s SPIRIT WEEK for St. Peter’s School, and it’s our first Shelter-In-Place Spirit Week!  We have Spirit Week to celebrate our unity and school pride.  Even though we are not together in the school building, there are different ways we can show St. Peter’s spirit and help others keep up their spirits.  We can be grateful to our family members and caretakers at home, and help each other around the house.  We can do our best as we move forward with Distance Learning.  And we can make sure we pray for others and pray in thanksgiving for our blessings!

       As we take part in Spirit Week and recognize the different ways we can show our St. Peter’s spirit, let us take time to pray as a community to the HOLY SPIRIT for guidance and strength, especially in these final weeks of this school year.

COME, HOLY SPIRIT,

And fill our hearts with your gifts.

Let our love be true and our charity be generous.

Help us in all our needs 

and grant us the knowledge to do what is right.

Advise us in our doubts,

Dear Parents,

       As we continue through the Easter Season and this month of Mary, let us pray to our Blessed Mother for continued strength.  We must keep our faith and be reminded of the joy of new life after a time of great difficulty, as we learned from the glory of Jesus’s resurrection.   Together we can reflect on this prayer from Pope Francis:

QUE PASA 5/6/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       This Sunday, we celebrate Mother’s Day. We recognize the important role that mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and all mother-figures play in our lives!  We are thankful for the love they show us and sacrifices they make for us.  During this month of May, we also dedicate time to pray to our Blessed Mother Mary.  Especially as we face our current challenges, we look to Mary as an example of faith, love, and courage as she said YES to God!  Let us pray in thanksgiving for our Blessed Mother Mary and for all mother-figures in our lives.

Heavenly Father, 

We Praise You and we thank You for the gift of our mothers, through whom You give us life and through whom we experience love. We thank You for Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, a mother so gracious and a woman of example in motherhood for all of us.  May our prayer warm the hearts of all mothers. May they know that they are loved and precious. May mothers all over the world feel in their heart the joys of being called a mother and in all their goodness and all their failings, be blessed in Your love and forgiveness.  We pray in Grace they belong close to You Lord Jesus Christ, AMEN.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

As mentioned during Monday morning assembly on Class Dojo, it’s Teacher Appreciation Week! Take some time to send your teacher a message of “thanks” for the different ways that they teach you and care for you.  We’re not in the school building together, but teachers are thinking about and praying for students and families every day, and growing with students through Distance Learning. Thank you, teachers!

As announced last week, the Archdiocesan mandated school closures have been extended until the end of this school year in June. 

With the extended school closure, some important school events have been postponed:

- First Reconciliation and First Communion will be postponed until Fall 2020.  No date will be set until school is re-opened.  Depending on guidelines/restrictions on social gatherings, these events may be further postponed until Spring 2021.

- Confirmation at St. Mary’s Cathedral is postponed until July 12, but is subject to change again depending on guidelines/restrictions on social gatherings.

- Currently planning for a modified 8thgrade graduation ceremony for June.  (Date, time, and location yet to be determined)

STUDENT COUNCIL

Even though we are not in the school building, we are continuing with teaching and learning.  We are also moving forward with our Student Council elections!

QUE PASA 4/29/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       As the month of April draws to a close, I reflect on what our school community has experienced in a relatively short amount of time—our school accreditation visit, the school closure, Distance Learning, shelter-in place.  Simultaneously, we transitioned from Lent to the joy and new life of the Easter season.  God reminds us that after enduring a challenge, we can emerge stronger and even more grateful for the blessings that we have.  I feel we are learning and growing from facing challenges, and I am grateful for the hard work and support of everyone—teachers, staff, parents, students—especially over these past several weeks.

       I continue to keep our entire school community in my prayers, and together, we can turn to God for strength and guidance as we face the effects of the pandemic.  Here is a prayer (from the Kildare and Leighlin Diocese) that we can offer together:

Loving and healing God, we stand before you as people of hope, trusting in your care and protection. May your faithful love support us and soothe the anxiety of our hearts. Generous God, fill us with compassion and concern for others, that we may look after one another in these challenging days.  Bring healing to those who are sick with the virus.  May those who have died rest in your eternal embrace.  Comfort their family and friends. Strengthen and protect all medical professionals caring for the sick and all who work in our medical facilities. Give wisdom to leaders in healthcare and governance, that they may make the right decisions for the well-being of all people.  We pray in gratitude for those who continue to work in the days ahead in so many fields of life for the sake of us all.  Bless them and keep them safe.  AMEN.

Please make sure that you and your child are aware of these regular Zoom meetings, and be prepared with the learning materials as directed by the teacher.  Participation in Zoom sessions is very important!  If you have any questions about Zoom meetings or any Distance Learning assignments, contact your child’s teacher via Class Dojo or email.

QUE PASA 4/22/2020 (ENGLISH)

Dear Parents,

       We are now in the Easter season, but what does living the spirit of the Easter season mean? Here are three suggestions from, “Be Fearless, Be Joyful, Be Renewed: Living the Spirit of Easter” (www.loyolapress.com). I feel that as we endure the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, these Easter reminders can also help us to stay hopeful and positive!

Live With Joy.  The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus teach us that suffering is transformed through faith in the Risen Christ. With this faith, we are able to hold on to an enduring sense of joy even in the midst of the sadness we experience from the loss of a loved one, a failure to achieve an important goal, or a setback during recovery from an illness.

Live Without Fear.  The Resurrection teaches us that God can overcome anything, even death. When the Risen Christ appears to the women at the tomb and later to his disciples, his first words are “Do not be afraid!” (Mt 28:5). These words speak to our hearts, helping us cope with fear. Our faith allows us to trust that God can overcome our most serious problems.

Live With New Eyes.  Just as the return of spring makes us feel like the whole world is new, the Resurrection of Jesus makes “all things new” (Rev. 21:5).  The Easter spirit is a spirit of renewal that enables us to show up at work with a positive attitude, to renew relationships that have been taken for granted, and to express appreciation and affection to those closest to us. It means to see the world through new eyes—God´s eyes!

The Resurrection reminds me to stay faithful.  Let’s do our best to help each other keep the faith and not lose hope!

SCHOOL CLOSURE

As I shared on Monday via Class Dojo and SchoolSpeak (email), Superintendent Pam Lyons has officially announced that the Archdiocesan school closures and Distance Learning will extend until the end of the school year.  (For St. Peter’s School, our last day of school is Friday, June 12.)  Therefore, Distance Learning will continue until the end of this school year.

Teachers and school administration will keep parents updated regarding events such as First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and Graduation.  We are working with our pastor, Father Moises, to see how we will proceed with these events.  With the restrictions on large gatherings, it is difficult to predict and plan at this time, so your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated!

FREE COVID-19 TESTS

The organization Unidos en Salud/United in Health is offering a helpful service for a limited time.  Through a partnership between UCSF, the Latino Task Force for COVID-19, and SF Department of Public Health, they are offering free COVID-19 testing for all persons age 4 years and older in part of the Mission.

To qualify, you must live or work within a certain area of the Mission AND pre-register for the test.  Registration is now open online.  Testing will occur from April 25-28, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

The Food Bank will be distributing bags of groceries on a weekly basis: 

- Thursdays near Mission High School (Dolores Street between 18th and 19th Street)

- Fridays outside of Lincoln High School on 24th Avenue

* Both places will be operating from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  

The SF-Marin Food Bank also has a “Locator” tool to find food assistance (such as weekly groceries or one-time emergency food) in San Francisco.  One of their locations is our own St. Peter’s Church.
